I REMEMBER THE SQUIRREL

I remember the squirrel
inviting me
into his house
that goes deep underground
as I guessed it would.

I remember
how he showed
me the ocean
beyond the horizon.

We went swimming
to help a lion-fish
escape from a fishing boat.

We went diving
too, with a shark
who told us
we will be able
to breathe.

I remember the squirrel
waving as I walked home.

__________

Why do you like to write poetry?

Oscar Brady: “I like to write poetry because it keeps my brain busy and lets me think. I like poetry because it makes words sound just right. When I write a poem the sound of the words can put more interest into a short space and it can be read in a certain and very particular way … just the way I want it to sound.”

LET’S SAY THE RAIN

Let’s say the rain
ate the sea
then poured it out.

Let’s say the wind
discovered the cliffs.

You think that nothing happened
even though the horse
ate the house of hay.

I left for my new world
my new life
and my new way of eating.

And now when I look back
I can’t remember.

THE MOUNTAIN RAVEN

Snow fell on the Mountain Raven
the river gushed over him
he wanted freedom
instead he met a deep sleep
as he fell,
it took him to where
his dreams began
with snow.

__________

Why do you like to write poetry?

Oscar Brady: “Poetry is interesting. It can be about real life or imaginary worlds; it can have a bit of humour or it can be serious … poetry can be anything you want it to be and that is why I like it.”
