Open Poetry

Conversation with
Juan Felipe Herrera

Rattle #44

Releasing in June, Rattle #44 is another entirely open issue. We simply chose our favorite 37 poems from the tens of thousands that had been submitted to us over the past year. It’s summer, and poetry has turned up the heat, it seems, with visits to strip clubs and topless swimming pools, and Kenny Tanemura’s brilliant “Ode to Short Shorts.” But it’s not all love and lust: These poems run the gamut of contemporary human experience, from churches to trust falls, suicide to salvation. The issue also features several long poems, including Lucas Crawford’s unforgettable indictment, “Your Fat Daughter Remembers What You Said.”

In the conversations section, Timothy Green discusses poetry and life in a lively conversation with California Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera.

350+ Poets Read Their Work

As much as we loved providing an audio CD for issue #27’s Tribute to Slam, we didn’t want page poets to be left out. The tradition of public readings is central to contemporary poetry, whose medium, we’ve always felt, isn’t the page, but rather the breath itself. Here is an opportunity to listen to poems as the authors intended them to sound, in their own voice.

Any poems that have appeared in Rattle are eligible, and this archive will be updated regularly. If you are a poet who we’ve published, and would like to be included, email us to ask how. We also plan on adding audio clips from recent and upcoming interviews—keep an eye on this page for updates.

Tribute to Buddhist Poets

Conversations with
M.L. Liebler & Chase Twichell

Releasing December 1st, this winter’s issue of Rattle highlights the work of 30 contemporary Buddhist poets. As Dick Allen writes in his introduction, Buddhism “is not a glimpse or gaze but an immersion. There’s no glass, no other side.” These poets don’t write about Buddhism, so much as they seek to live it—“my small boat is no one on this water,” writes Lola Haskins. All of their poems are full of compassion and mindfulness, informed by years of studying human experience from this unique perspective, which has much to offer Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

Rattle #36 also features an open section of 33 poets, and the 15 finalists for the 2011 Rattle Poetry Prize—with the $5,000 winner to be chosen for the first time by popular vote. In the conversations section Alan Fox’s speaks with M.L. Liebler and Buddhist poet Chase Twichell.

Poets Discuss Their Recent Books

In our effort to provide more original online content, we’ve decided to start interviewing poets about the books we’ve enjoyed reading. Our goal is to publish about one book interview each month. Authors: To have your book considered, just send us a physical copy. If it’s not selected for a book interview, it will still be considered for an editors’ recommendation. All books received at our office are automatically considered for both; there’s no need to do anything special.
