“Connections” by Nora Hunter

Nora Hunter (age 12)

CONNECTIONS

I often find myself awake at absurd hours
1, 2, 3, even 4 in the morning
in search of the perfect cookie recipe,
Inspirational pictures of places I’ll never visit,
Or obscure tutorials on how to read minds

There’s something comforting
About the pale blue glow
Floating against dark walls in my room

Somehow, it’s restful in itself
Knowing that the rest of my world is asleep
And I can find peace in my palm-sized square of wonder

Or perhaps,
It’s the thought that maybe
There’s someone else
Restlessly lying in bed
Gazing at lists of 100 Things to Do in New York on a Budget
That makes me feel utterly connected
With the outside world
Even in my bed,
With the soft morning sky
Peeking through my windows
